  • Say you want to cook some beans and ham and you have a recipe written for canned beans instead of for dry beans. How do dry and cooked beans relate? It turns out that most beans when cooked turn out to weigh about 2.5 times that of when they are dry.[1]
  • A pound of dried lentils (in the pea and bean family) takes only about 20 min. to cook, but the same amount of dried beans takes about 1.5 hours to finish cooking. The lentils are more time and energy efficient to make than beans.
  • Tired of having supermarket cheese mold in a week or two? Buy shredded cheese to put in the freezer. This way it keeps and one can use it whenever needed.
  • The same thing holds with green bell peppers. They often go bad in a few days in the refrigerator. Instead, just wash and dice the entire pepper and use what is needed at the time. The rest can be put into a Zip Loc bag and put into the freezer.
  • Onions can also be used and the rest (diced) put into the freezer.
  • Use the tips of a pair of scissors to get the cotton out of a pill bottle.
  • Frozen peas or shredded cheese make great best ice packs.
