Medicinal Plants in the News
What is Plantsasmedicine.com?
This site is about the fascinating world of medicinal plants and their many uses. Various ancient plant medical systems of the world such as Chinese, Indian, Korean, Japanese, American Indian, Central American, and those of the peoples of the South American rainforest.
Medicinal plants are worth learning about for many reasons. Firstly, they are very economical, since they can be grown from seed or cuttings for very little cost. Over half of the people in the world lives on less than $2 per day and about one-fourth lives on less than $1 per day. This is in huge contrast to what people in the developed world pay just for pharmaceuticals.
Plants have been used as medicine by humankind for at least 60,000 years. Neanderthals buried their dead with medicinal herbs. The last Neanderthal on Earth lived about 28,000 years ago.[1]
More and more archaeological evidence is found all of the time and what people proclaim as being "the oldest" really is only "the oldest yet found."
Almost all herbs and spices used in cooking have important properties besides flavoring. Often spices help kill pathogens (bacteria, fungi, etc.) in the food, thus keeping it safe for consumption. Some spices repel insects and many spices have antiinflammatory properties (caryophyllene). It is quite possible that many of us would not be around had it not been for our ancestors' use of medicinal plants. The people who used them had a survival advantage over those who did not.
